Pay Attention to Yourself

Taking care of your mental and emotional health is essential, yet everyday responsibilities can make it feel overwhelming. Balancing work and family only adds to the challenge—but prioritizing your well-being is vital.

Have you ever felt like the weight of your responsibilities is just too much? Maybe you’ve experienced days when your mind races with worries, or you struggle to find peace amidst the chaos. You’re not alone. Many of us are looking for small moments of relief and genuine joy.

Crafting is not only a distraction, but it also brings a sense of accomplishment and calm. However, finding the right creative outlet can be tricky, especially if you’re always on the go. I recommend portable crafts, such as small crochet or knitting projects, like a dishcloth or a small scarf, which easily fit into most bags. Personally, I always keep a travel-size project, such as a mini cross-stitch kit or a granny square, with me wherever I go.

Of course, creative projects are not limited to yarn. Anything you can do that requires your full attention and diverts your mind from current worries can help you overcome mental health obstacles. Portable projects include writing a short poem, drawing in a sketchbook, coloring in a pocket-sized coloring book, reading a favorite novella, or doing simple embroidery, such as stitching a small design onto fabric. I used to love reading, but my thoughts wander while I read these days. I wish I liked reading as much as I used to.

With PTSD, redirecting my focus to a creative project often prevents triggers from escalating. This reset is essential for me during challenging moments.

Choosing creativity in stressful moments isn’t always easy. But I’ve learned that small creative acts can interrupt negative thought patterns and restore a sense of control. Each stitch, sketch, or sentence is progress—a reminder that challenges do not define me. No matter your situation, finding practical ways to reset and regain control is invaluable.

If you’re struggling, remember: you don’t have to manage it alone. Small creative acts—a few lines in a journal, a quick doodle, or a handful of stitches—offer moments of relief. Embracing these actions helps build resilience and joy in your everyday life.
